Pride and Prejudice, which opens with one of the most famous sentences in English Literature, is an ironic novel of manners. In it the garrulous and empty-headed Mrs Bennet has only one aim – that of finding a good match for each of her five daughters. In this she is mocked by her cynical and indolent husband. With its wit, its social precision and, above all, its irresistible heroine, Pride and Prejudice has proved one of the most enduringly popular novels in the English language.

Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen)No sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she had hardly a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes … ‘When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited; he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life.

One of England’s greatest writers, Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 at Steventon, Hampshire, where she lived the better part of her life. With her only sister, Cassandra, she was schooled briefly by a Mrs Ann Cawley, and rounded out her education through the efforts of her older brothers and her father, an Anglican vicar.Sense and Sensibility began as Elinor and Marianne, Austen’s first full-length novel, which is thought to have been written before 1796. She returned to the work late in 1797, revising it greatly. Published in 1811, when she was 35, Sense and Sensibility was the first of Austen’s novels to appear in English bookstores. It was a well-received work, selling out its print-run in under two years, and was followed by Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816).As with her other novels, Sense and Sensibility concerns the question of suitable romantic partnerships and, ultimately, marriage. However, the author herself never wed, though she was briefly engaged — for a matter of hours — at the age of 26.Austen’s life was not a long one. In the early months of 1816, her health began to fail. Over the course of the next months she managed to revise an old novel, Northanger Abbey, and compose another, Persuasion. However, by mid-March 1817, Austen was no longer able to write. She travelled to Winchester for treatment, and died there on 18 July 1817. Northanger Abbey (1817), Persuasion (1817) and Sanditon (1925), an unfinished novel, were all published posthumously.

Anne Elliot lives at the time of the Napoleonic wars, a time of accident, adventure, the making of new fortunes and alliances. A woman of no importance, she manoeuvres in her restricted circumstances as her long-time love Captain Wentworth did in the wars.

«I am half agony, half hope.»Anne Elliot lost the love of her life eight years earlier and the sorrow lingers on. Yet the dashing Captain Wentworth did not desert her; it was Anne who rejected him because she was persuaded that she could make a better match. She never did.Suddenly, life deals them a second chance. Anne and Wentworth meet again on the social circuit. He acts coolly and even openly courts a younger woman, yet Anne remains painfully alert for the slightest hint that their love might be rekindled.Persuasion was Austen’s last novel, published posthumously in 1818

Everyone looks upon shy, self-effacing Fanny Price as the poor relation among her four spoiled cousins at Mansfield Park.Adopted at a tender age by an uncle and aunt who have grown rich from a sugar plantation in distant Antigua, she finds herself morally at odds with them and their offspring. Her chief consolation is the kindness of the younger son, Edmund Bertram, whom she secretly loves. The arrival in the village of city sophisticates Henry and Mary Crawford sparks a series of romantic entanglements which lead the Bertrams to the brink of social disaster and Fanny to the indisputable conclusion that propriety and pretty manners are not substitutes for integrity.

«He began to feel the danger of paying Elizabeth too much attention.»Pride and Prejudice , one of the most famous love stories of all time, has also proven itself as a treasured mainstay of the English literary canon. With the arrival of eligible young men in their neighbourhood, the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their five daughters are turned inside out and upside down. Pride encounters prejudice, upward-mobility confronts social disdain, and quick-wittedness challenges sagacity. Misconceptions and hasty judgements bring heartache and scandal, but eventually lead to true understanding, self-knowledge, and love. It’s almost impossible to open Pride and Prejudice without feeling the pressure of so many readers having known and loved this novel already. Will you fail the test — or will you love it too? As a story that celebrates more unflinchingly than any of Austen’s other novels the happy meeting-of-true-minds, and one that has attracted the most fans over the centuries, Pride and Prejudice sets up an echo chamber of good feelings in which romantic love and the love of reading amplify each other.

Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775 at Steventon. a small village in Hampshire, England. She received nearly all her education through her brothers and her father, an Anglican minister. Her earliest extant pieces date to 1787, at which point the author would have been 11 years of age. In adulthood, Austen began writing novels, the first being the brief Lady Susan. Her first published novel, Sense and Sensibility appeared in 1811. and was followed by Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Mansfield Park (1814). All enjoyed respectable sales, and the author developed a dedicated readership. As her books were published anonymously — ‘BY A LADY’ — Austen achieved little in the way of fame during her lifetime. That said, the identity of the author was known widely amongst the aristocracy. The Prince Regent, the future George IV, was a particular admirer of Austen’s work. Emma was dedicated reluctantly to the prince at the urging of the author’s friends.Emma was first published in December 1815, days before the author’s fortieth birthday. The work proved to be the last novel published during her lifetime.Austen’s health began to decline in the early months of 1816. She started work on a new novel, The Brothers, in January 1817, but was able to work for only three more months. In April, Austen was confined to bed.On 18 July 1817, she died in Winchester, where she had gone for medical treatment. N onhanger Abbey and Persuasion were published five months later. Her final novel, The Brothers, was not published in full until 1925, as Sanditon.

‘Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever and rich…had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.’This comedy of manners, published in 1816, features Emma as an avowed spinster and matchmaker, who is convinced that she knows best who should marry whom. And despite Austen’s own doubts, the charming and infuriating heroine is a favourite of many readers.Having almost ruined the prospects of Harriet Smith, her protegee, and been reprimanded by her good friend, George Knightley, Emma finally learns a little humility. She also comes to some surprising conclusions about love and marriage.

‘Those who tell their own story, you know, must be listened to with caution.’When young Charlotte Heywood arrives in the seaside resort of Sanditon, a town seeking to reinvent itself as a fashionable destination, she too attempts to begin anew.As she begins to settle into Sanditon society, a slew of new arrivals stirs up emotions. Among them are relatives of the wealthy widow Lady Denham, seeking her generous fortune; Miss Lambe, a rich heiress; and Sydney Parker, the handsome young man who catches Charlotte’s eye. Charlotte must navigate the complicated web of liaisons, finding herself more involved than she ever intended…Collected here with her unfinished work The Watsons, and the novella-in-letters, Lady Susan, Austen’s final, unfinished novel demonstrates her biting sense of humour and gives readers a thrilling glimpse of a genius at work.
